TECA3x2

TECA Energy Centre

Dr Telford was concept designer for Net Zero energy solution for TECA Aberdeen.

The TECA development comprises the new Exhibition and Conference Centre, a 200 bed four- star Hilton Hotel, and a 150 bed Aloft Hotel. He developed a “net zero” decentralised energy system for the whole site comprising an on-site energy centre with the UK’s largest static fuel cell installation, and on-site Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility, See below.   The project was cover article in CIBSE Dec 2019. https://www.cibsejournal.com/case-studies/showcasing-net-zero-event-complex-aberdeens-energy-strategy/

TECA AD Plant3x2

TECA AD Plant

Integral to the energy solution for TECA was the parallel development of an on-site AD plant. David developed the concept and full business case of an onsite plant feeding green gas to the TECA Energy Centre, This plant is designed to provide full gas upgrading and sends gas by private pipe to the TECA Energy Centre and to the Gas Grid.  Commissioned in 2020, the plant is a low carbon energy source for the Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Gas fired CHP Engines and topping boilers in the TECA Energy Centre.

HVS Launch 2

HV Systems

Sonas Energy were retained by start-up HV Systems to develop options for hydrogen production and Hydrogen Refilling Stations in parallel with the planned phased roll-out of vehicles. We defined an economically and environmentally sustainable business case for early deployment of a hydrogen HGV fleet. David became Chief Scientific Officer for the start-up where he developed "SEMAS"  a patented AI driven control system providing dynamic predictive optimisation of the on- board twin Hydrogen Fuel Cells and HV Battery System and regenerative braking system.

SECCSouth3x2

Scottish Exhibition Campus (SEC)

Sonas Energy ere retained to develop the energy masterplan and trajectory to net zero for the Scottish Exhibition Campus. The masterplan included major retrofit of all existing buildings, eliminating direct gas fired heating and providing for a phased net zero solution for new build.

Sonas’s proposal is for a distributed energy solution combining roof top solar, and BESS  connected a “smart” private wire microgrid with a modern 5th generation ambient heat network feeding a planned series of distributed and embedded energy resources throughout the campus. The work was commissioned  as part of COP26 which was hosted at the SEC.  We then went on to support SEC's baseline carbon assessment and plan for trajectory to net zero.

Peterhead

Buchan BioGas, Peterhead

Sonas Energy supported Buchan Biogas early stage project development and planning application for Peterhead gas to grid project.

The project takes organic feedstocks in the form of energy crops and food waste to produce biogas and organic fertiliser. The facility receives energy crops (mostly grass silage) and pre-processed food waste by tanker for a food waste pre-processing plant.

HGS500C-2_with Bus

Project Alba

Methane to Hydrogen Hydrogen Feasibility Study for GFD.   The work was completed included full techno-economic modelling and sustainability assessment leading to an investable business case.   The results were a target of £2/kg ( when the diesel price was £1.03/litre ex VAT,) and achieving a base carbon intensity for the delivered green hydrogen of 25.65gCO2/MJ with negative carbon intensities using carbon capture at AD and/or the Steam Methane Reformer    The reports covered:

System Description, Commercial Assessment, Technical Specification, Sustainability, Market Assessment, and Risk Assessment.

IngwellHall-Westlakes

Westlakes, Cumbria

Westlakes Science Park is owned and operated by BEC Ltd.

Sonas proposed private wire  linking building mounted solar,  and a “smart micro-grid” where the proposed new energy assets provide vehicle charging and enable vehicle to grid (V2G) energy saving. We carried out full techno-economic modelling including demand side response, electrification of heat and a limited heat sharing network for he buildings using cooling. We also were retained to bring the opportunity to market.

BlackDog

Blackdog, Aberdeenshire

Sonas were involved at and early stage. Blackdog mixed use development masterplan lays out a plan for a new town centre for the four combined settlements of Blackdog, Balmedie, Potterton and Belhelvie.

The work included developing a coherent and commercially viable energy strategy for the whole development.

NHSGGC

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

David provided the technical lead for developing pathways to net-zero for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. NHS GGC is Scotland’s largest Health Board with over 12 large acute hospitals, 7 ancillary units including home to NHS 24, central laundry, and decontamination units, and over 100 primary care facilities. The study is developing credible pathways to net zero for power, heat and transport across the whole NHS GG&C Estate.
